Red-bellied parents are both busy feeding peanuts to their young. Phoebe young are following their parents about. There are several Downy woodpecker chicks, and may be more than one family group. I watched a very aggressive female chase off young that were being fed by a male. She even chased one into the bushes! She then took some suet off in another direction toward peeping youngsters.
I found a perfect Luna moth by the side of the road this week, and of course, brought it home.kayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07864899201129698832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7233284299148659244.post-55235779184887414182007-06-15T21:40:00.000-04:002007-06-16T06:02:59.289-04:00June 15, 2007Saw a Great Egret at Long Road (FHV).
Rumors of Bobolinks at Shaw Road and female Yellow-headed Blackbird at Nelson Ave (FHV), but couldn't find them.
Still lots of Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrows at Hacker Street. Still looking for the Nelson's.

Last week in the Azores saw tons of Common Canary, European Goldfinch, Azores Chaffinch, Azores Goldcrest (like golden-crowned kinglet), Blackbird (a thrush that looked like a black Robin and sang like a Wood Thrush), Blackcap (the only warbler there), European Robin (not related to ours), Azores Grey Wagtail. There was an American Wood Duck that they think got there on its own. Couple of Canada Geese (of course). Went to Nordeste, but didn't see the endemic Azorean Bullfinch. Better luck next time. But I did see some House Martins near the cliffs .. they are not unknown there but are rare.
Will also bring my big camera next time instead of the dinky one I brought. What was I thinking?clongworthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03783329049295168457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7233284299148659244.post-33396078466627569482007-06-06T08:58:00.000-04:002007-06-15T21:23:46.605-04:00June 6, 20076:00a.m. Matt. Town Landfill. Hoping for Indigo bunting, saw female, no male. Cedar waxwings, hummers, catbirds, Kingbirds, great crested flycatchers. baby phoebe (so cute) mom and dad not too far away, song sparrow, chippers, gold finches, baltimore and orchard orioles. Pat, Kay and I agreed we saw a Hermit thrush. Also feeding pair of Titmice. Heard nestlings. Kay almost added a dead baby ring neck snake to growing collection of creatures.cboltonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04152698584762259341noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7233284299148659244.post-15768257559370438912007-06-01T21:27:00.001-04:002007-06-02T08:09:01.113-04:00May 30 to June 1, 2007Lunchtime obsession with the Sharp-tailed Sparrows in the marsh at Hacker Street (fhv). Had to go to work early to open up so took extra time at lunch.

Got lots of good looks at Saltmarsh Sharp-tails and even saw one singing. Saw two chasing a third way off.

June 1, I got brave and set off into one of the creeks (either Boys or Girls). Had to watch my step for the muck and also the depth (had on my rubber boots).
The sparrows flew out left and right. The best reward was a little Nelson's with a short bill and orange breast with no streaks. I watched it so long, I only noticed I was sinking into the muck in the nick of time. It was kind of a dangerous trek all alone.clongworthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03783329049295168457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7233284299148659244.post-27218034269056941092007-05-29T20:19:00.000-04:002007-05-29T21:06:10.052-04:00May 29On Friday May 25, Joe and I went to River St. Acushnet to check on the orioles. Glad to report that Pat missed the obvious. Got some stuff for BBA. Catbirds with nesting material and a pair of Great Crested Flycatchers building a nest in a hole in a tree on the side of the road.
Lots of fighting. RW Blackbirds locked in battle fluttered into the pond, but flew back out. Flock of Cedar Waxwings very noisy. Some pairs feeding each other.
Young male Orchard Oriole and a female kept coming back to the tree I was sitting under and making scolding noises. The male sang very nicely a few times.
Saw a raccoon on the other side of the pond investigating trash. He went back into the woods and a few minutes later there was some ungodly screaming from the marsh....he may have found a nest.clongworthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03783329049295168457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7233284299148659244.post-81883507094473903782007-05-18T14:03:00.000-04:002007-05-18T14:07:15.760-04:00May 18, 2007Pouring rain and cold. Went to Long Road (Fhv) at lunch not expecting to see much. At the far end of the "pond" something moved in the tree. I thought it was the Green Heron from a couple days ago, but when I got a good look saw that it was a Black-crowned Night Heron. Of course since it was pouring I didn't have my camera, but it was a great birthday bird anyway.
Brings my Long Road list to 91 species.clongworthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03783329049295168457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7233284299148659244.post-28043615686848698972007-05-17T05:19:00.000-04:002007-05-17T21:25:07.759-04:00May 17, 2007Red-eyed vireos and Great crested flycatchers have arrived. Early in the morning, I watched a female yellow warbler by the pond, and there is a pair of wood ducks that seem to be calling that area home. I don't think they used the nest box, but they are always in the little pond area when I visit.kayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07864899201129698832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7233284299148659244.post-11568984771142983782007-05-16T09:48:00.000-04:002007-05-17T21:24:19.428-04:00May 16, 2007Long Road (Fairhaven) -- heard an unfamiliar call and then saw a dull unfamiliar bird with slight streaking on each side of breast. Trudged back for my book and when I returned, saw a strange large chickadee chasing the first bird. Turned out to be a pair of Blackpoll Warblers.
A Green Heron was very obliging posing for me. See his photos.
The usual crowd was there: Crows, Titmice, real Chickadees, Yellow Warblers, nesting B. The song is note perfect, but in different order. If I hadn't seen the bird sing, I wouldn't have believed it! There are many yellow warblers and black and whites in the woods, and I surprised a pair of wood ducks the other evening.
